Kin Village CIC
Kin Village CIC: A Sustainable, Inclusive Solution for Homelessness
The Liverpool City Region is facing a devastating housing crisis, with 6,500 people in Liverpool alone approaching the city council each year without a home. The financial burden on the council has skyrocketed from £250,000 in 2019 to a staggering £25 million in 2023/2024—a 10,000% increase in just five years.
Currently, 1,000 families in Liverpool are in temporary accommodation, with 558 in emergency bed and breakfasts or hotels. Shockingly, 400 of these families have been in temporary housing for over six weeks. This includes 448 children living in cramped rooms without kitchen facilities or space to play.
The existing system is failing. It isolates and excludes people, proving that a home is more than just a roof over one’s head. People need community, support, and a chance to rebuild their lives.
The Solution: Kin Village CIC
Our vision is to create a sustainable, inclusive space for those impacted by homelessness to live, work, and play. Kin Village CIC will provide a holistic 6-12 month rehabilitation program, featuring zero net carbon modular homes and amenities on the banks of the River Mersey. Residents will have access to support programs to help rebuild their lives, as well as communal spaces to foster social connections and community engagement.
Key Features of Kin Village CIC:
- Sustainable Practices: Kin Village CIC will promote urban farming initiatives, enabling residents to grow their own food and contribute to their sustenance, fostering a sense of self-reliance and environmental responsibility.
- Holistic Support: The village will offer comprehensive support and empowerment, addressing the needs of the homeless population through a community-centered approach.
- Rehabilitation Support Program: This program aims to equip individuals with essential skills, resources, and opportunities to reintegrate into society, find meaningful employment, and achieve self-sustainability. Trained professionals will provide mentoring, educational, and vocational training, while local private sector partners will offer job placements.
Kin Village CIC will collaborate with partners across the private sector, public sector, and charitable organisations in the Liverpool City Region. Inspired by successful initiatives like Embassy Village in Manchester and The Social Bite in Edinburgh, Kin Village CIC is a tangible, achievable solution.
